Welcome to scary doll person, where I GEEK LIEK WHOA about Plastic People. I'm not so much a doll collector as I am addicted to customising dolls. Particularly turning dolls into my favourite television and film characters, or just re-styling dolls for fun.

I'm also offering my customising services for sale and trade. Most of the dolls I put up for sale are priced to cover the cost of the raw materials, and generally run between $75 and $200 depending on the doll and the cost of the individual pieces of the fashion, whether or not it involved a partial repaint or a reroot, etc. If you have a custom doll you'd like made, please feel free to PM me for a quote!

Services I can provide are:
  • Restyle factory-rooted hair (boil perm / haircut / hair straightening / braiding / etc.)
  • Rerooting hair (please specify nylon or saran, and colour preferences)
  • Partial repaint (eye enhancements / new eyebrows / lip enhancement or lip repaint / nails and toenails painted / adding or removing freckles / etc.)
  • Rebodying dolls (taking a head from one body and putting it on a different body)

If you would like to see examples of the dolls I've been customising, check out my flickr gallery.

New in my etsy shop: 1:6 scale printed minis for your IT Jem dolls! Also added more 1:6 jewellery sets, and a bunch of 16" doll jewellery as well.

Actually, I've been doing LOTS of things lately. namely, making all the doll jewellery EVER, for sale in my etsy shop. Here's a peek at some of what's currently on offer!

I've been hanging out on Flickr and in doll groups, and keep forgetting to update here! But I updated my etsy shop over the week-end with LOADS of new jewellery! Here's a peek at one of the new sets!

Scary Godmother dolls Kickstarter!!!!

This is the Kickstarter for my friend Jill Thompson, who is raising funds to do limited edition collectible dolls based on her children's books (which were also adapted into a Hallowe'en special that shows up on Cartoon network every autumn). SO EXCITED!!!!!
15th-Jun-2013 05:03 pm - Stuff!
Thanks to aimeekitty, I have discovered the joy and wonder that is Spoonflower. They print fabric from your designs, and I FINALLY did something I've been wanting to do for 9 million years. I designed the cartoon version of Outta My Way.

I got a sample yard, and am working out a pattern and adjusting it specifically for the new Integrity Jem dolls bodies.

I still have some issues with figuring out a) what gets sewn first (i.e. hems and seams and which pieces in which order) and b) how to make the neckline work so that it's more of a V-shape, but not so wide that the new dolls boobs are showing through the fishnet. But I'm getting there! Pink socks are next. I've found some pink tricot that will probably work, but I'll probably have to do the yellow polka dots with fabric paint because it's been IMPOSSIBLE to find tricot with the right pattern. I've also figured out how to do the hair ornament using silk flowers, belt buckle using ribbon sliders, and a friend at work does modelling and has offered to cast shoes for me. I may even be able to make the green and yellow earrings. OMG I AM SO EXCITED. So, probably by August, I will have complete fashions to sell in my etsy shop.

Also on the horizon are bedding sets. I had sewn some prototype duvets, pillows, duvet covers, and quilts in summer 2011 by hand, and then decided that since it was all straight seams, it would make sense to wait until I got the sewing machine. But then another co-worker offered to loan me one. So I may actually be able to get those up in July. I love the idea of selling white duvets and pillows, and then separate pillow slips, accent pillows, and reverseable duvet covers, so people can change up the looks whenever they make a new diorama. Also, I think ti would fill a niche as NO-ONE is doing that for 1:6 scale doll collectors near as I can tell.
15th-Apr-2013 10:54 am - April Photo Challenge at BC.com
thor (darcy smile)

Possibly I had an HILARIOUS time doing a photo shoot for BarbieCollector.com’s April Photo Challenge: “Best Teatime Fashion”.

I wanted to poke MAJOR FUN of the idea of a fancy posh Afternoon Tea where you get all dressed up and wear a hat and gloves and eat bitty bitty cucumber sandwiches. Which I’m pretty sure is a thing that only happens in films and high-end hotels.

Tea Time = ALL THE TIME. Also, I wanted to take a pic of Darcy’s GINORMOUS mug. Because my mugs are that size. Trufax.
14th-Apr-2013 02:12 pm - Clint Barton
avengers (pretteh clint arms)
Also, I neglected to post my redressed Clint, in his civvies from The Avengers.

I'm still waffly about the shirt. It's the Integrity Rio Pachecho's shirt from the first Wave of the JEM line, and while the colour is perfect, the weight of the fabric and the way the neck is stitched isn't quite right. I have a Hot Toys Cityhunter Saeba Ryu shirt that's perfect, but it's bright red, and I can't seem to get it to fade to that "It's not pink, it's just red that's been washed a lot" shade.

14th-Apr-2013 01:44 pm - Velcrogate 2013
Every time I think fandom can't get any weirder something proves me wrong.

This week, it was VELCROGATE 2013: THE BOATER ENSEMBLE over on BC.com's message board. Long story short: the new Silkstone doll has a thin strip of high-end velcro as the closure on the dress beneath the jacket. Designer Robert Best even posted (for the very first time) on the board, explaining it was an aesthetic decision, a design choice to ensure the best fit of the jacket over the dress.

Yeah. Didn't help.

Trying to get a doll collector to explain why they don't like velcro was not unlike talking to a 4 year old about lima beans.

KID: I don't like lima beans

ME: Why don't you like lima beans? Is it the colour? The texture? The taste? Have you tried them when they're fresh from a garden, or in a dish with other ingredients? Why exactly don't you like them?

KID: Because they're lima beans

I could understand the older collectors, who collect Silkstone dolls because they grew up in the 50s and 60s with vintage Barbies, and want a reproduction of that experience exactly. That makes sense, even if I don't agree with sacrificing the fit of a garment for the sake of metal snaps and a memory.

But omg, you guys. It's as if someone's parents died in a horrible velcro incident, and they're the freaking Batman sometimes.

Is there some magic trick to getting a Hot Toys Truetype advanced muscular body neck peg to actually GO IN THE DAMNED NECK & HEAD SOCKET JOINTS that I am simply not aware of?

I had no problems with the Hot Toys Clint Barton body I got loose, but now that I finally picked up a 2nd head to put on the body in his Hawkeye tac suit, and I cannot get the neck bolt to go into either the neck OR the head, for love nor money.

Darcy and Clint are wishing you all the joy of the season.

1st-Nov-2012 10:21 pm - Diorama find of the day...

ZOMG 1:6 scale Fire Extinguisher! Since I cannot work on freelance in the office (even on lunch--long story) today I decided to track down a miniature fire extinguisher I'd seen in another diorama photo on flickr. Little did I realise that it wasn't a dollhouse or Re-ment type miniature--it's a novelty cigarette lighter. And as such, instead of being sold for $10-20 as a scale miniature, I found them selling for as low as $1 on ebay! Possibly I am WAY too cheered by this.

In other news, I am trying (and failing) to find a 1:6 scale step-ladder along the lines of this one:

Why oh why is there nothing like this for Playscale/1:6 scale? I am searching desperately, and I found an awesome 1:12 scale folding stepladder. But no-one has anything even vaguely like that for 1:6 :(

15th-Oct-2012 03:11 am - Things I wish I did not know.
I cannot sleep, so I ended up emailing back and forth with diorama artist in Italy, via flickr. SHE IS AWESOME.

So, apparently the HOLY GRAIL for 1:6 scale kitchen dioramas is the Re-ment Stitch Enjoys Cooking #7 stand mixer from 2010. Things I had not known, and wish I had not googled at 3am, since it's PERFECT and less HUGE than the Hallmark Merry Mixer. But that is what I have, and so that is what I will be using in my kitchen diorama (which won't be happening until I get my 1:6 scale Clint Barton anyway).

Also, drip coffee makers? Not so much in Japanese miniatures. *headdesk* Espresso machines? SURE! But standard drip coffee makers such as one might find in every home/office in the America? Not so much. However, I found a 1.25" one that might work, assuming no-one notices the scale issues.

ETA: Someone should really tell Kitchen-Aid that they would make A ZILLION DOLLARS if they put out sets of brightly-coloured 1:6 scale stand mixer magnets.
12th-Oct-2012 10:00 pm - FUZZY CHAIR!

So I've been brainstorming for a week on how to cover two plastic 1:6 scale Jacobsen Egg Chairs with fabric. I am still working on a pattern for a non-stretchy fabric cover, but tonight at Target I found a pair of fuzzy purple ankle socks and PRESTO! Fuzzy chair!

I have recently made EXCITING DISCOVERIES regarding 1:6 scale shoes! Namely:

WinX US shoes fit Monster High
Monster High & Stardoll boots work very well on Fashion Royalty
Cy Girl/Takara fit Moxie Teenz & Jem

This pleases me, as Moxie Teenz have VERY limited shoe options, but I was able to get some really NIFTY Cy Girl shoes and boots recently. So expect rebody/redress photos soon of Stormer & Shana, Twlight Victoria, and a custom MH CAM.
28th-Aug-2012 09:03 pm - OMG YAYS!
scary doll person
I found the Monster High CAM Design Lab on clearance at Target! I had no idea that blank doll is a skintone match for the CAM witch. I am now seriously contemplating swapping the witch head for the custom Kaye I'm creating for blackholly for the blank because the witch's expression is a bit severe and I'm tempted to try and paint a sweeter expression on her. But I SWAPPED OUT THE HANDS! This makes me glee. Also, it looks like they sell add-on packs with blank heads, so that makes me glee as well.

I need to photograph the three MH customs I'm working on--one is going to her new owner next week-end and I still need to make the dress. I forgot to get the sewing machine from the trunk of Boo's car but I'm actually more confident and comfortable making it by hand.
20th-Jul-2012 12:09 pm - Dressed Cartoon Jem!
truly outrageous
I added yet another layer of pink blush, because she was looking too pale. The photos really don't do the doll justice. I think it's something about the way the facial screening reflects light. I'll see if I can't get better shots in sunlight at some point.

I'd intended to make a new belt, but on a whim, used the rest of the packet of RIT Petal dye I'd got for re-dyeing her hair to see if a stained belt I had would take the dye. I knew the cotton side would, but was shocked at how saturated the fringe was! And I love how the silver woven side dyed, even if it's not as dark as the fringe.

Alas, I cannot keep her--she's going up on eBay this evening. But here's hoping she goes to a good home!

16th-Jul-2012 03:01 pm - happy accidents
truly outrageous
So this week-end, I tried the RIT method to re-pink a vintage Jem/Jerrica whose pink hair had faded to white over time.

Only, being a GENIUS, not only did I manage to get the dye on the blonde parts of the hair, but I didn't dilute the dye enough so it was VERY VERY PINK, darker than I wanted. Cue me then using boiling water to try and "remove" some of the dye. However, I've decided to repaint her eyes blue as a "Cartoon Jem" and make the best of it :) Also, some of the blonde hair didn't get as saturated as the rest, so then I touched it up with the Fabricmate pen. Here are the results!

I actually am counting it as a happy accident at the moment :) But I'm also saving the RIT dye solution since I made WAY too much, and will hopefully be able to re-heat it/reuse it later, to re-pink other Jem/Jerricas.
15th-Jul-2012 03:04 pm(no subject)
i'm okay
Despite having MOUNTAINS of work to do this week-end, I let myself get distracted yesterday by trying a cartoon Stormer repaint. Next time, I think I need to sketch out the eyes first, so I don't end up with clearly non-symmetrical eyes like this one. But I was really happy with certain aspects of this try. Not the least of which were the lips, and also mixing the exact right green for her eye shadow.

I've never painted eyes from scratch before and was VAGUELY TERRIFIED. And I still buggered up the eyelashes. But I figure, I'll get better w/practice. Also, apparently yellow paint stains the vinyl. *sigh*

In other news, I've been updating the garage sale items as I can. HOLY CATS I HAVE A LOT OF STUFF. I really really really hope that stuff sells, as my digs really are full to bursting right now and I'd liek it to look 85% less like a doll factory, when people walk through the door.

lastly, I've yet more stuff up on ebay. Mostly JEM, with some barbie thrown in.
13th-Jul-2012 12:16 pm - Friday the 13th indeed.
truly outrageous
Somewhat hilariously, discussion of the SDCC Hollywood Jem exclusive broke the JemCon.org messageboard. They restored it from a back-up, but they lost about 6 weeks of posts. Including all my posts, and all the posts about Hollywood Jem. Figures!

In other news, I'm continuing to sort items for the July 28th Garage Sale at my digs, and I have no idea yet as to pricing, but let's just say that thigns will be priced to move. So if you collect dolls--or, frankly, you have kidlets for whom dolls are still a going concern, please do come over! So far it's looking to run 10am to 5pm, and I will literally have a metric fuckload of stuff. Barbie, Bratz, LIV, Moxie Teenz, Monster High, and all kinds of bits and bobs.

There will be some high-end 1:6 diorama furniture (I kinda sorta, erm... forgot I had the Barbie Jonathan Adler sofa, end table, and lamp still in its packaging) but for the most part it's LOTS of playline plastic furniture from all over the place. I'm trying to be ruthless and ONLY hang onto the stuff I really really need, and whatever doesn't sell will be donated to Brown Elephant to get it OUT of my house omg.

In addition to prepping for the sale, I've been restoring some loose 1st edition Jem/Jerrica dolls to resell. Why is it that the ones whose earrings still flash are always the ones a) with inkstains and b) loose waists, while the ones with perfect hair and facial screening are always the ones whose earrings don't flash?

I wish there was a way to restring Jem dolls, but I can't figure one out because of how the legs and waist are constructed. I may end up rebodying the ones where the earrings don't flash onto dolls with tight waists and torsos, instead.

However, re-pinking the hair using a Fabricmate neon pink marker WINS. It looked WAY too pink to me at first, but then once I washed out the excess dye, it was a perfect cotton candy pink. And the Testor's pink acrylic model paint I found is PERFECT to touch up the lip decals.

I never realised how many Jem dolls I had floating around until the last month, when I decided to start fixing them up. Apparently in my quest to get complete Stormer on-stage fashions, I've ended up with A LOT of loose Jem dolls. Including one really gorgeous nude Aja that may go to boosette.
8th-Jul-2012 10:11 pm - Why yes, I am slightly unstable.
i'm okay
So, after a LOT of searching, I found replacement "claws" for Stormer's top. And chrome stickers. And orange flowers. So after I fixed up all my Stormer dolls, I put together "DIY Stormer repair kits" for sale on etsy and ebay. Because I figure this way a) I can recoup what I spent on the raw materials and b) help other Jem fans restore their childhood dolls.

My next insane challenge? Making replacement decals for Jem's silver belt.

In other news, if you are in the Chicago area, I am trying the whole concept of a Garage Sale again on July 28. I've got photos up of some of the items on my flickr, and this week will be sorting and photographing more.

So... I've been thinking about the comments folks have made about how "Harsh" the face sculpt seems, and here is my theory: It's actually the facial screening, more than the sculpt itself, for me.

So I digitally "repainted" one of the prototype photos to lighten her eyebrows to pale blue (like the cartoon), and gave her a fuller lower lip. Presto! A much "sweeter" expression!

Original IT prototype photo:

30th-Jun-2012 03:10 pm - Stormer "Repair Kits"!
i'm okay
So lately I was on A QUEST. I had several loose Stormer on-stage fashion tops that were missing their "claws" and chrome stickers, and I wanted to fix them up so I could redress dolls. And I was incredibly thrilled to find both black sequins that are a perfect match for the sequins used by Hasbro in the 80s, and 1/4" chrome stickers. So I'm adding "DIY Stormer Repair Kits" to my etsy shop.

Next up: finding orange plastic flowers to add to the kits!

2nd-Mar-2012 01:11 am - GARAGE SALE!
scary doll person
So I need to do a MASSIVE CULLING of dolls & diorama furniture, and it occurred to me that before I try and put everything up on ebay, giving locals a shot first would be a good way to meet fellow doll geeks.

I've a half dozen boxes and 50 gal tubs of nude Barbies (all vinyl--no Silkstone), fashions & shoes, and diorama furniture including a lot of IKEA dollhouse pieces, Barbie & Bratz plastic pieces, and wood and other bits and bobs that need to be organised and out of my digs due to space issues. So my plan is to separate out what I'm holding onto, and literally put EVERYTHING else up for sale at cheap prices.

I will take photos and put them up on Flickr before the 10th so folks can see if it's worth trekking out to my place. It will probably be lots of things--I have a LOT of headless bodies, a box of heads, but also a large number of Frankendollies (rebodied Barbie Collector and Playline dolls), and a few Dynamite Girls as well. I'm a doll artist, not a collector, so usually I buy what interests me and what I might be able to use for a commission or a dio. I also have some loose Re-ment, and that sort of thing.

I live in Chicago proper, at Devon & Leavitt in West Ridge. Parking in my neighbourhood isn't fantastic, but there is street parking as well as metered parking on Devon, and there's a Salvation Army across from me with a parking lot, as well as a 7-11 at the corner with a lot.

My flickr handle is taraljc, and I've no pets (for them what are allergic), and don't smoke indoors. I'm also open to trades (especially as I've been trying to find my Holy Grail doll, an Empress Josephine with the Tango head sculpt) and have some collector dolls (including a Tokidoki). But really, I'm just hoping to gain some storage space!

For more info, my email is ljconstantine@hotmail.com. I'm looking to start the "garage sale" at 1pm on Saturday, March 10. Feel free to just come and browse! I'll throw on the Blu-ray of "Thor" or somesuch, and we can totally geek out over Plastic People.
13th-Feb-2012 01:35 pm - what I've been up to...
scary doll person
This is so odd. For years, as a diorama geek, I have had three "Holy Grail" pieces I've been chasing on the evilbay. And now I have them.

They are "My First Kenmore Kitchen" playset, a Bratz Winter Lodge fireplace, and a MyScene Party Pad spiral staircase.

I really need to actually DO SOMETHING with them now, huh?

In other news, I've been working on a bathroom diorama since November-ish. And the only things left to do are a) learn how my miter box works and cut the trim for the doorframe and window frame b) hand-paint the windows in the bay window white and attach the bay window and finally d) attempt to locate a shower that works with the tub. What I want is something like this:

But I cannot find anything even close to that for 1:6 scale. 1:12 scale? SURE! EASY! But I have yet to find a 1:6 scale shower head other than the show horse playset. I may have to dummy something up.

In the meantime, I actually did cut and paint the beadboard, baseboards, and trim. I just haven't glued them to the walls, yet. I keep meaning to, and then getting distracted.

Why a bathroom, you ask? Because I saw Roville's GORGEOUS country cottage bathroom, and wanted to see if I could create something even half as detailed.

In other news, still behind on reroots. ALWAYS. *headdesk*
31st-Dec-2011 11:37 pm(no subject)
So... I am DUMB.

There's a 1:6 scale miniature mirrored vanity tray that I see over and over again in etsy shops etc., and I keep thinking it MUST be some kind of easily findable wholesale jewellery finding. but I'll be damned if I can figure out what it is. I have one of them that came with the Jazz Diva doll, but for the life of me I can't figure out where everyone else finds them...

Anyone got a clue?

ETA: Hurrah! it's apparently a Lace Edge Setting.

I am officially a HAPPY MONKEY!

For months, I've been trying to find miniature candles the right diameter for 1:6 scale pillar candles. Birthday candles were too thin, mini tapers were too thin. I was looking for candles roughly the diamater of crayons. And now I have finally found them!

Menorah candles form Target. No, really. Who knew?

I'm planning on putting up set sof bath salts/bath beads/pilalr candles/soaps & soap dishes in the etsy shop. I just need to figure out a way of cutting the candles down to about an inch high.

thor (curvy darcy)
So, to distract msyelf from the ebay drama, I have decided I need a 1:6 scale plastic Darcy Lewis from Thor to hang out on my desk and make snarky comments.

For the record, this is Kat Dennings, who plays Darcy:

Plan thus far: Restyled/partially repainted Barbie Basics 2.0 Glimmer, black glasses from I can be Architect, and as close to Darcy's 2 outfits from the movie as I can manage.

This is the BB 002 Glimmer:

Needless to say, Barbie or LIV bodies not really adequate to display the AWESOMENESS that are Denning's curves, so I am hoping that the Glimmer head will match a 27cm Obitsu white body. They have a new design that is pleasing to me, though I am aware I am pretty much screwed where shoes are concerned. I'm hoping Momoko shoes will fit.

So... yeah. I'm pretty crazy. But boosette said she would knit me a TINY WOLLY HAT and also SWEATERS! So I am getting her lace weight yarn and wee tiny knitting needles!
6th-Nov-2011 12:47 am - And the Tokidoki saga continues.
I swear, I could just cry with frustration at this point.

Long story short: the buyer has listed the doll she bought from me and obvs. doesn't want to end the auction and ship it back, despite ebay point blank telling her she has to.

I got a message from the seller about an hour ago, letting me know that IF they choose to send it back, they will let me know.

I am at the point where I am thinking I should just cancel the refund, and use the money to try and buy another one. Assuming I could even find one for that price.
4th-Nov-2011 06:39 pm - I should have known.
So I sold my Tokidoki Barbie last week-end. Literally about 2 minutes after the auction went live, it sold for the BIN price. I've taken a look at the buyer's auctions, and it looks like she's been buying up Tokidoki dolls to flip on ebay. So... a speculator, not an actual collector.

Today the doll was delivered and the buyer is claiming that the box was damaged during shipping, and she wanted to exchange it for a mint doll in box. I told her I only had the one, and to please send the parcel back and I would give her a full refund. At this point, I'd rather get the doll back and be able to re-sell it than to deal with people like her.

Strangely, she has been completely silent since I emailed her. If she keeps the doll and gives me negative feedback, I may have to cut a bitch.

ETA: Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand now she's fighting me on it. She's claiming that the box was damaged before I sent it. She's angling for a partial refund. I've told her repeatedly that nope, I just want the doll back, thanks.

I am getting so angry, I'm seething. Seriously. If she doesn't send the doll back, or claims that the USPS lost it? I am going to cut a bitch.

EMETA: She opened an ebay case, stating she plans to keep the doll and wants a 30% refund. HAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHA. NO WAY. I have escalated the case, pointing out that I've already issued her a full refund, and she is refusing to send the item back.

So I have a new project! I am working on a Queen-sized contemporary bed and bedding. The bed is an inverted mahogany letter tray, the mattress is foam covered in white muslin, and I've made two bed pillows and two matching brown pillow slips. Next up is the comforter! Since I don't have a sewing machine, I'm doing it all by hand--which is all I can do right now because I'm having workmen at my place and the doll desk where I do most of my work is currently buried.

primeval (becker/jess talking)
Why yes, I am just a bit deranged.

more pics!Collapse )

Both ARC Becker and Date Night Becker started off life as a Swan Princess Prince Ken, rebodied onto a Fox Mulder Ken articulated body. Date Night Becker is wearing a 1:6 scale leather jacket, vintage Ken plaid shirt, Barbie Basics jeans and vest, and 1:6 scale tactical boots.

ARC Becker is wearing 1:6 scale tac gear from head to foot, including short-sleeved shirt, trousers, thigh holster with SIG 226, stab vest, boots, and (not pictured) tac jacket. he also has the closest shotgun I could find to the Mossberg 500 Ben Mansfield uses (and adores) on the series. The wrist watches are either Ken or 1:6 scale Dragon Military.

Connor is a Speed Racer Ken with Fashionista Ken hat, Tango Ken waistcoat, Harley Ken long-sleeved tee-shirt, custom necklace, Joan Jett bandanna, and Fashionista Ken jeans, Barbie Basics Ken trainers.

Abby is a Grace Kelly head on a Disney Store Snow White body with articulated wrists and elbows, NASCAR Jeff Gordan jeans and My Scene belt, Fashion Fever jacket, 1;6 scale white vest, and Speed Racer's scarf to hold her hair back. I think her boots are My Scene originally!

Jess Parker is a Mackie collector head on a Disney Store Snow White body with articulated wrists and elbows, wearing Speed Racer Trixie's pink mini dress, Jonathan Adler bracelet, LIV wrist watch and coat, Pop Life necklace, I Can be Computer Engineer bluetooth, and random shoes.

OMG YOU GUYS! I am doing a workshop in Reno on how to kit-bash fashion dolls into chicks from fiction!

I may have made a high-pitched sound of joy only dogs can hear when I got the email.
